From 25 to 26 January 2018, a joint ICAO / EUROCONTROL Runway Throughput Enhancement Solutions Workshop was held in the European and North Atlantic office of ICAO (EUR / NAT) in Paris.
The members in the Russian delegation representing JSC Azimut and participating in the workshop were Viktor V. Solomentsev, Deputy CEO for scientific work and development, Oleg N. Nazimov, Deputy CEO for ad-hoc projects, and a specialist of Azimut-Alliance, the Saint-Petersburg branch.
As a whole, the Russian delegation at the workshop was represented by FSUE “State ATM Corporation”; FSUE “Central Aero-hydrodynamic Institute named after Zhukovsky”; Azimut, JSC; International Aero Navigation Systems Concern, JSC.
The main topic of the workshop was runway throughput enhancement through the use of updated information on the aircraft wake vortex. For this purpose, airports in Europe are offered different solutions, two of which have reached the stage of possible practical application using the following methods: RECAT-EU, the European “re-categorization” of aircraft weight categories according to turbulent wake and separation minima for departing and arriving aircraft (European Wake Re-categorisation and Separation minima on Arrival and Departure) and TBS (Time-based Separation for Arrivals). Practical assessment, performed at the main European airports (Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris and Heathrow airport in London), has confirmed an increase in the throughput.
The workshop discussed the use of information on turbulence on the airfields, possible solutions for blocks B0 and B1 WAKE modules of the aviation system block upgrade (ASBU) concept.
The workshop covered the following topics:
Review of operations and restrictions on the runways of the main airports of Russia (FSUE “State ATM Corporation”);
Review of the RECAT-EU and TBS solutions (presented by EUROCONTROL);
Coordination of ICAO activity related to wake vortex safety (all participants);
Russia participation in research projects (Federal state unitary enterprise “Central Aero-hydrodynamic Institute named after Zhukovsky”; Azimut, JSC; International Aero Navigation Systems Concern, JSC);
Preparation for a global meeting on turbulence (WAKE) at ICAO headquarters
Reports of the participants can be found at the official web site of ICAO.
