Azimut, a company within the Rostec State Corporation, has installed a digital ASR (Aerodrome Surveillance Radar)-AMI 2700 radar at Mendeleevo Airport on Kunashir Island, the southernmost island of the Greater Kuril Chain. The new radar will enable aircraft to take off and land in thick fog conditions, which are common on the island. The equipment will improve transport accessibility to the Kuril Islands.

The ASR-AMI 2700 radar determines aircraft positions more accurately than its predecessors and also helps increase airport capacity. Additionally, the new type of radar will significantly enhance the quality of information exchange with aircraft and reduce the workload on air traffic control services. Other advantages of the system include its compact size and low power consumption.

"The installation of the ASR-AMI 2700 at Mendeleevo Airport will help solve one of the most pressing problems of air communication with the island — frequent thick fogs that have caused airport operations to be intermittent. Our radar can 'see' aircraft even in bad weather, allowing controllers to manage air traffic regardless of weather conditions. This will contribute both to increasing the island's transport accessibility and to developing tourism there," commented Alexey Galchenkov, Deputy CEO of Azimut.

Similar equipment by Azimut has already been deployed and is operating successfully in Chukotka, the Kuril Islands, Yamal, and other regions of the Russian Far North.
